A study by Australian researchers Dr Deb Dempsey from Swinbourne University of technology and Associate Professor Jo Lindsay of Monash University has given insight into the reasons why (Australian) people choose a certain baby name. The most common reason we chose a name is because we like the sound of it. Here is a breakdown of the reasons a baby name was chosen, according to the researchers.

- 19% meaning or cultural background
- 15% matches well with surname
- 14% family significance
- 11% liked the name in a book, TV or film
- 11% it is unusual and stands out
- 4% named after a person they admired
- 2% named after a friend
- 1% it is popular and fits in
